Playin’ Hookie

20120326-222157.jpg
Today was absolutely one hell of a day. I ended up getting out of work at 2 and decide to play hookie for the rest of the day. So i headed up north to get a couple hours of relaxation on the river chasing spring Steelies with my fly rod.

I expected the river to be crowded but was amazed to only find 3 guys fishing… And none of them were in my spot. I fished hard for 2 hours only landing a couple trout to keep me going. Then an hour before dark as the sun set everyone else went home and left me alone on the river. I was relishing the serenity and time alone on the river and was happy to just have the water rushing past my knees when it happened.

The fish turned on and for the next hour I could hardly keep them off my line. To me there is nothing quite as amazing as an evening on the stream alone; but when the fishing is good too it is simply awe inspiring.

I ended up landing two fish after fighting great battles with 6 others in addition to the 3 nice trout I landed. With the sky aglow in a spring sunset and a steelhead slipping out of my hand to return to the river I had to sit down on the bank and soak it all in for a moment and humbly realize just how blessed I am.

My first Steelie of the year was a beautiful male that put up one heck of a fight.

Started the day with this nice 14 inch Brown Trout. Gotta love fishing in Michigan.

Dad and I finally got out to chase some fine Michigan steelhead. We headed to our favorite river, the famed Pere Marquette.

When we arrived at the butt crack of dawn we encountered a Clackacraft traffic jam…. I knew it was going to be a busy day on the river.

The fishing was tough, the fish were there but because of the warm spring we have had, the fish had seen almost every fly know to man! I managed to hook up first with this beauty.

Not to be out done Dad landed this amazing female not a half hour later!

Overall, we could have landed more fish. Going 2 for 12 is not normal but I was thankful to spend a wonderful day on the river.

Spring is Here

20120322-212316.jpg

Well it official, Spring has arrived here in mid Michigan and our food plots are looking amazing! The deer have absolutely hammered these food plots all Winter with the lack of snow cover here most of the season. With this early Spring and unseasonably warm temperatures the food plots are just blowing out of the ground and looking beautiful!

We have put away our predator gear and started warming up the turkey calls. This is going to be a hot turkey season with a lot of action so far this year! Stay tuned everyone

Heading North to the Pere Marquette river with Doc. Driving through the storm on our way to chase some chrome steelhead. The report is that the fish are in and they are hot. We’re going to see if we can’t play with a few and enjoy this warm spring weather.

Well I Thought That Would Be A Coyote For Sure

20120305-194218.jpg

Went out to some state land tonight to try and call in a coyote before our weather warms up tomorrow. I thought this spot would definitely produced a dog but nada.

I guess that’s why they call it hunting. Beautiful evening though which was amazing.

Winter Predator Hunting

20120304-131833.jpg

Well us Team FLG boys have been having a blast this winter chasing predators throughout Michigan. Tex piled up this nice coyote that came in with another yote the other day. Always nice to get some fur on the ground.

Check out the video below as Tex recaps the story.

How To Camouflage a Gun Stock FLG Style

The Rifle In It's Original Form

I recently obtained a classic Mosin Nagant 91/30 on a trade. Chambered in 7.62x54r the rifle is known to be a great shooter with some specimens showing great accuracy. They can be picked up at almost any sporting goods store for around 100 bucks. Mine is a re-arsenaled version so the receiver is newer and not as nice looking as the original as well as the stock being not very high quality. All these factors lead me to decide to give the stock a new paint job!

The first step is to dissemble your weapon unless you want to paint the exposed metal as well. I took mine apart leaving me with just the stock and barrel shield. You can use any type of flat or ultra flat spray paint. I have heard Krylon is the best, for this job I used Rustoleum’s camouflage paint. Once you have your weapon broken down you will want to sand the parts with sandpaper so that the spray paint will adhere better. Once that is done wipe the stock down removing all the dust. You may also want to wipe the stock down with Acetone or Mineral Spirits to remove any oil or grease that the stock may have in it.

Once this is all down you are ready for step two, the base coat, when camouflaging you want to start with your lightest color and work toward your darkest color. In our case that is the color tan. You give the stock a good coating of tan.

The Stock After a Second Base Coat of Paint

This may take several coats. You want to make sure that the stock is completely covered so that none of the original color is showing through. Your weapon should look something like this at this point.

After allowing the base coat to dry you are on to the third step. You are going to need some stencil material. I prefer to use natural material like long grasses or pine branches, you can use a stencil cut in paper or what ever you like, it is up to you. Here is the material that I used, just some grasses that I pulled from a field.

The Stencil Material

Make sure it is dry, then lay it across your gunstock and spray your next color over the stock. I used olive drab as my next lightest color. The grass you laid across the stock will create shadows and depth where the paint sprays through the grass.

Adding The Stencil Layer

Once the paint is dry reposition the grass, maybe add a bit more grass depending on how much paint you want to spray through, then paint your next darkest color. I used brown for my next color.

After Several Layers of Shadows

You can vary the paint you use and add more colors depending the effect you want on your stock. You can use darker colors but they do not usually blend in as well as light colors. I had black but I did not add it to mine. I just used a three color paint scheme. On smaller objects like a stock the 3 color works well, any more colors and they start to all blend together and cover each other up. You can do this with any colors you want. To practice I used red, white and blue spray paint. I would suggest practicing on a piece of cardboard or scrap piece before venturing out and painting something you actually want.

Here’s the finished product from my efforts.
